A Memphis man is behind bars, accused of robbery and assault, after police say his mom turned him in after seeing a picture on the news.

Derriontay Perry, 20, is charged with two counts each of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.

Police say Sunday, a couple was robbed in the 5000 block of Berta Road. They say the suspect walked up to the man in their front yard asking for a ride. When the man refused, the suspect pulled out a gun, demanding the keys. At that point, police say the woman was walking out of the house. The man told her the suspect wanted her keys, so she walked back inside, but police say she grabbed a gun, not keys.

Police say the woman pointed the gun at the suspect, who then pointed his back at her. She fired into the air, and the suspect took off, firing a shot back at the couple. The woman returned fire but was unsure if the suspect was hit.

Video and pictures from home surveillance cameras were released to the public, and police say Wednesday, Perry’s mother called and told them she recognized her son as the suspect. He was taken into custody.

Perry is in jail on $100,000 bond. He is set to be arraigned Thursday.
