The start of a new school year for Mid-South kids is Monday and a nationally known rapper is making sure students go back prepared.
Memphis native Moneybagg Yo hosted a back to school drive in Hickory Hill Sunday drawing crowds of families.
Families waited in the scorching heat to get a glimpse of the rapper and to receive free school supplies.
“Just giving back to all the kids who need it. Came from the same place I came from,” said platinum recording artist, Moneybagg Yo.
The entertainer says his upbringing is what drives him to do these types of events.
“He’s giving back. And there’s not a lot of rappers or entertainers from Memphis that does that,” said Alicia Fisher, parent of six kids.
From 3 to 7, Moneybagg Yo and his team passed out backpacks designed by his company, Breadgang Apparel. Free food was on hand and of course music. The artist performed some of his latest hits during a free concert.
“When my friend told me about it I screamed so loud until my lungs went out,” said 9-year-old, Beziyah Watts.
Memphis Police blocked off a portion of Hickory Hill Drive for the event. Moneybagg Yo told our reporter, he’ll give back to his community as long as he is able. He plans on making this an annual event.
“It’s going to help me a whole lot, it will give me a big start before I start buying the things I couldn’t afford at first,” said Ashara Hassel, a single parent of four children.
It’s that reaction that drives this platinum recording artist to never forget where he came from.
“It’s a good thing to do I think anybody in my position should look back and do it. This should be the only thing you look back and do is to give back,” Moneybagg Yo stressed.
