MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Deborah Allen’s 80s hit “Baby I Lied” took her to the top of the country charts. It was among her many hits during her decades in the music business.
Tuesday she was brought before the Memphis City Council which honored her for 40 years of music-making.
She was born in Memphis in 1953 at Methodist Hospital. Allen has recorded 12 albums, including 14 singles on the Billboard Hot Country songs chart. Not only did she write hits for herself, she also wrote hits for other artists including Tanya Tucker and Patty Loveless.
“I’m so emotional today,” said Allen. “You guys really tapped a part of me. Memphis is definitely in my heart, in my soul, in my blood, and I take you with me everywhere I go.”
In 1987, Prince produced, wrote, and performed the title track of Allen’s album “Telepathy” making her one of the only country singers to work with the artist under his alias Joey Coco.
