The two men charged in connection with the death of a two-year-old girl in 2017 are headed to court Wednesday morning.
Cousins of Tylan and Brandon McCray were arrested in connection with the death of Laylah Washington, who was shot during a road rage incident in June 2017. Tylan McCray faces first degree murder and other charges, and Brandon McCray is charged as an accessory after the fact.
Despite the suspect’s vehicle caught on camera, dozens of calls and more than $20,000 in reward money, the case lingered unsolved until the arrests were announced Saturday. Authorities said momentum picked up after a Crime Stoppers tip in June, the one-year anniversary of Laylah’s death.
Investigators say they matched a gun tied to an October arrest of Tylan McCray to the same weapon used in Laylah’s murder.
According to separate affidavits, Tylan McCray admitted to firing shots and his cousin Brandon McCray admitted to being the driver during the crime.
In a statement, an MPD spokesperson said: “This holiday season, the Washington family and all Memphians affected by this senseless killing can find some level of comfort in knowing that those responsible have been arrested and will answer for their actions.”
