MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Memphis firefighters went door-to-door Tuesday to make sure neighborsknow the importance of having a working smoke detector.

Tuesday’s smoke detector blitz in north Memphis comes a day aftera deadly house fire on Alameda Avenue. The fire was so damaging, investigatorssay they can’t tell if there was a working smoke alarm in the home.

Officials say the fire is tragic reminder about the importance ofsmoke detectors.

“I know you may be asleep, you may be otherwiseengaged, involved in something else, but to hear that smoke detector going offis a sound like something you’ve never heard before. And it’s probably a soundyou’ll never forget when it goes off when you really need it,” said MFD DivisionChief Markus Smith.
