A Millington man faces several charges after investigators say he was drunk and causing a ruckus at a local bar, spitting on and fighting deputies, and even biting one deputy.

Dustin Oliver was arrested early Sunday morning at the Shake Rag Bar in Millington. He is charged with 5 counts of assault, possession of prohibited weapons, disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and resisting official detention.

Deputies were called to the bar, and when they got there, the owner told them “most of the troublemakers have left.” That’s when deputies say they heard someone screaming for help outside the bar. They say they found Oliver screaming obscenities and threatening them.

According to the affidavit, deputies tried several times to de-escalate the situation, and they were able to get Oliver to walk back to the parking lot, where they say he jumped into the back of a pick-up. They say several people offered Oliver a ride home, but he became irate and started screaming again. They say at one point, Oliver stood up in the back of the truck and told a deputy “take off that badge and I’ll whip your a**.”

Deputies say while making threats, Oliver tried to climb out of the truck, and they were able calm him down and get him out of the back. They say he began resisting again when they tried to cuff him but were eventually able to get him into custody after a brief struggle. During that struggle, investigators say Oliver bit one deputy’s pinky finger, and three other deputies were hurt, one with a possible sprained hand, another with a finger injury, and the third with a swollen hand. All were taken to the hospital and treated.

Deputies say Oliver pulled out brass knuckles from his pants and tried to throw them under one of the deputy’s cars. They say he also spit on a deputy, telling the deputy he had AIDS, then later claiming he did not have AIDS.

Deputies say emergency crews also showed up to the scene, and Oliver first refused treatment. When they placed him in the back of car, they say he started kicking the door, and eventually had to be sprayed with a chemical agent.

Investigators say the truck Oliver had been in was damaged during the struggle. He was eventually taken to Regional One to be treated, then booked into the Shelby County Jail.

Bond for Oliver was set at $8,000.
