MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee woman whose son was fatally shot by police last year has filed suit against the city of Memphis and its police department.

The Commercial Appeal reports Marlene Alexander said in the suit that her son, 25-year-old Terrance Carlton, was unarmed when he was shot.

At the time of the shooting, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a news release that an officer tried to stop Carlton, who reached for his waist and threatened the officer’s life before the officer fired.

Memphis police identified Carlton as a suspect in two overnight shootings. Police spokesman Louis Brownlee couldn’t confirm Wednesday if Carlton was the shooter.

Attorney Shantell Suttle is representing Alexander and says they’re awaiting results of the shooting investigation.

The lawsuit asks for $50,000,000 in compensatory damages and $50 million in punitive damages.
