Local government has been supportive of the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission since its establishment in 1985. It is now one of the oldest local film commissions in the country.

The team of industry professionals Film Commissioner Linn Sitler and Deputy Film Commissioner/Project Specialist Sharon Fox O’Guin have worked for decades to successfully build the area into a popular production center.

“We love our city and believe Memphis has the potential to be the perfect backdrop for any filmmaker who wants to produce a compelling and entertaining movie,” said Mayor Jim Strickland. “We’d love to see more films made here, and this ranking will help.”

“It’s always great to see Memphis recognized on a national scale,” says Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris. “MovieMaker Magazine did a great job in capturing the essence of Memphis: funky, edgy, and hardworking. This nod is a real tribute to the hardworking people who make our community a great place to shoot films.”

Commission Board Chairman Gale Jones Carson said, “I’ve worked with the Film Commission since the year 2000 and have seen it through good times and bad. The good times are definitely here again – with Netflix and Hallmark loving filming in Memphis – plus two new exciting film programs overseen by the Commission Board members.” Carson continued: “On top of the state film incentive program, The Commission is beginning the only local incentive production refund program in the state! The Commission is offering a 30% refund to those Memphis filmmakers selected for the program!”

Factors such as cost of living, film festivals and organizations, film training programs, economic impact of production, jobs created by production, and the Commission’s Annual Production Report were all factors considered in Memphis’ selection to the Top 20 Cities List.
