MPD Helps Feed The Need With Thanksgiving Baskets

With Thanksgiving now only days away, the Memphis Police Department is doing its part to help feed the need.

Officers at the Old Allen Station in Raleigh are giving away 100 Thanksgiving baskets.

They were able to buy the baskets using money raised from the “Turkey Trot with a Cop” 5K earlier this month, which honored fallen Sergeant Verdell Smith.

Police say the baskets are not only a way to honor Smith’s memory but also build bridges with the community.

“We definitely want to show the community that we’re not the bad guy. You’ve called us to help, we’re going to come help. This is another way to help,” says MPD Lt. Col. Joseph Smith.

The baskets are going to families that were pre-selected with the help from guidance counselors at local elementary schools.
