MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com)- Four hundred years ago this month, the first documented Africans were brought to British North America.

The arrival of about 20 captured Africans in Hampton, Virginia began a painful era of American Slavery.

Sunday, faith leaders in Memphis honored them by tolling a bell for healing day.  Calvary Episcopal Church parishioners rang their tower bell for four minutes – one minute per one hundred years.

Local 24 News talked with a leader in the church who explains why remember this event is still so important.

“Not to dwell on the past but to acknowledge the past and by truthful about it so that we can ask the questions in the present that need to be asked about how do we actually make for a different world for our children,” said Scott Walters, Rector for Calvary Episcopal Church.

The National bell ringing is part of healing day events being held across the country.
