Neighbors On Edge After Woman Found Dead In Harbor Town Home

(UPDATE 11/8/2017 4:00 p.m.) Those who live in Harbor Town on Mud Island are worried, hours after a woman is found murdered inside her home.

Memphis police identified the woman as 56-year-old Susan Grissom. Family friends and neighbors described Grissom as someone who always had a smile and always lit up a room. Her body was found Tuesday night in the 900 block of Island Drive.

Memphis Police say investigators have yet to determine whether this crime was random or targeted. Neighbors who moved to Harbor Town for the feeling of safety and tranquility tell me they’re both stunned and devastated.

“It’s just very sad.” Kim Nesbitt fought to keep her composure Wednesday, knowing she’s one of the last people to see her neighbor Susan Grissom alive.

“I passed her house and she was getting something out of her car,” says Nesbitt, “… and I spoke to her and I didn’t know something had happened until someone called me.”

That phone call and the Tuesday night crime scene in Harbor Town confirmed that news; a homicide inside the Island Drive home. An act which put this tight knit community on edge.

“I don’t feel the same. I’ve walked by here multiple times a day walking my dogs and stopping to talk to people and I felt safe and I don’t right now,” says Nesbitt. “I feel like there’s a certain amount of security and peace that has been completely robbed.”

This crime follows this warning by management at a nearby apartment complex of a string of trespassers and vandals – an uptick that’s confirmed in recent crime stats in Harbor Town.

Recent crime statistics show Tuesday’s homicide follows a spike in the past two months. Within a half a mile of the crime scene, there were 52 reported incidents, including 15 thefts, 8 acts of vandalism, and 6 burglaries. That compares to 17 reported incidents in the same time period last year, which included 9 thefts, 3 acts of vandalism, and 1 burglary.

Investigators do not have a suspect description, and no one is currently in custody.

An MPD spokesperson says if anyone in the area saw anything suspicious Tuesday night to call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
