Memphis vs Suburbs: Safe Cities List

A new study draws a hard line between Memphis and bordering suburban cities. Safehome.org ranked the top 25 safest cities in Tennessee. Germantown ranks high on the list, but Memphis is dead last.

The study looked at cities with a population of 30,000 people or more. Germantown, Collierville, and Bartlett are among the safest cities in the state, each with a population of fewer than 60,000 people.

According to the study, Memphis is the least-safest city in Tennessee with nearly 700,000 people.

Blair Brown works in Northeast Memphis. We caught her fueling up before heading to Germantown to visit family. We asked Brown her opinion on a recent study by safehome.org that ranks suburban cities like Germantown the safest cities in Tennessee.

“I don’t think it’s the area so much as it is the people,” says Brown.

Germantown Police Deputy Chief Rodney Bright agrees, and says hiring good officers and communicating with citizens is key in keeping a community safe.

“We work hard in staying engaged to what their needs are, their concerns are, and we partner with them. We meet with them. We listen to them,” says Deputy Chief Bright.

Here’s how safehome.org ranked cities in Tennessee with a Population of 30,000 or more people:

  • Germantown ranked number 3.
  • Collierville ranked number 5.
  • Bartlett ranked number 9.
  • Memphis was last at number 25.

The study was based on a variety of factors over a one-year period including:

  • Population
  • Unemployment Rate
  • Household Income
  • And Education

There have been 191 murders in Memphis so far this year, about ten fewer than this time last year. There have been no murders in Germantown this year, and none last year.

“We know that Germantown is not an island. And crime doesn’t necessarily know where the city limit starts and where it ends. So we work really, really, hard with all our partners,” says Deputy Chief Bright.

“I just think that you have to watch your surroundings wherever you go because crazy people are everywhere,” says Brown.

Germantown has nearly 100 officers.

Memphis currently has about 1,900, compared to 2014 when there were 2,500 MPD officers.
