An effort to get ranked choice voting, alsoknown as instant runoff voting, back on the ballot failed Tuesday.

The process would allow voters to rank Memphis CityCouncil candidates in order of preference when casting ballots, instead ofchoosing just one, removing the need for an expensive runoff election.

Some candidates who are challenging citycouncil incumbents support the measure because the instant runoff system couldwork in their favor. They wanted a judge to decide on the issue before Septemberso it could be on the ballot for the city election by October, but the requestwas denied, so there will be no ranked choice voting in the next election.
