MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – In tonight’s Ransom Note: cities and their growth. I just dropped off my son at college in Knoxville, so I got to drive through congested downtown Nashville twice, giving me time to count all the cranes in the skyline of Tennessee’s capitol city.
I counted 16 cranes last week.
The city is growing by 100 people a day, and you can tell. Memphis is not, and honestly, I think that’s fine. Growth that fast causes its own set of problems. Still, it’s good to see growing signs here.
Tuesday was the groundbreaking for the much anticipated One Beale project, a dream come true for the Carlisle family which will build a Hyatt hotel and upscale apartment complex right at the foot of Beale overlooking the Mississippi River.
The high-rise Loews hotel seems to be on track, and there’s the high-rise office building called The Clipper set to be built soon next to the new FedEx Logistics global headquarters.
We may never have sixteen cranes in our downtown, but cranes show progress and investment, and we need that.
