17 years ago, Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy Rupert Peete was killed by a shotgun blast to the windshield of his squad car while responding to a shots fired call at a residence.
The suspect, Frederick Williams, an off-duty Memphis firefighter, had shot his wife, then set fire to the house.
Prior to shooting Deputy Peete, Williams shot and killed two firefighters responding to the burning home.
His wife was found dead in the garage.
Other Officers arrived on the scene and shot Williams after he refused to drop his weapon.
Williams was a firefighter who had just returned to duty after being on disability.
On April 24, 2006, Williams was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Deputy Peete had served with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department for 3 years.
