Memphis police say a second suspect is in custody after shots were fired near officers in midtown Wednesday evening.
It happened about 5:30 p.m. at Forrest and North Avalon. According to the police affidavit, officers were checking out a suspicious vehicle in the area when they heard shots being fired, and saw bullets strike the ground near them. Police say officers did not return fire. The officers chased the vehicle until it crashed into a utility pole, damaging two homes.
Police say the driver, 24-year-old LaDarren Easley, was taken into custody after a short chase. Easley is now charged with 4 counts of attempted first-degree murder, evading arrest, and reckless driving.
The passenger was taken into custody Thursday morning. Carl Betts is charged with attempted murder, employment of a firearm with intent to commit a felony, evading arrest.
