A new lawsuit filed by more than 100 Sevier County property owners is asking for $54 million from the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service for damages caused by the wildfires that ripped through Sevier County in November 2016.

The lawsuit claims the park service was negligent and in violation of mandated fire management policies and disregarded public safety. The suit is centered around four counts of negligence:

  1. Failure to Monitor the Chimney Tops 2 fire
  2. Failure to Comply with Command Structure Requirements
  3. Failure to Adhere to Mandatory Fire Management Policies and Requirements
  4. Failure to Provide Timely and Accurate Warnings to Park Neighbors, Local Government Officials, Residents and Visitors

Each property owner is suing the government for the damage to or destruction of their property.

The fire claimed 14 lives, injured 191 and damaged or destroyed 2,500 homes, buildings and other structures.
