Forrest was renowned for his tactics during theCivil War, but he was a slave trader before the conflict and later an earlyleader of the Ku Klux Klan.

A bust of Forrest is on display on the secondfloor of the state capitol.

Since 1931, every governor in Tennessee hasbeen required by law to sign a proclamation honoring the controversial Confederategeneral.
