The Shelby County Commission passed its wish-list of issues for State lawmakers in their upcoming session.
One top item is asking the General Assembly to find funding so that the TBI can investigate officer-involved shootings.
Right now the TBI only investigates fatal officer-involved shootings.
Commissioners also want shootings investigated when someone is critically hurt.
“What we’re asking for is the Tennessee General Assembly would consider adding additional to investigate involved officer shootings, which not only end up in death but also critical,” said Shelby County Commission Chairman, Van Turner.
That would cost more money and just because the Commission requests the funding doesn’t mean lawmakers will find it.
“A third party neutral investigation can clear officers who have been accused of wrong doing,” said Turner. “I think that’s the party that hasn’t been emphasized. This would assist law enforcement as well as the community as a whole.”
Turner says it’s unclear just how much more funding it would take to support more TBI investigations.
The Tennessee Legislative Session begins the second week of January.
