UTHSC’s Mobile Stroke Unit Receives First-Of-Its-Kind Accreditation

A Memphis medical unit on wheels is receiving national recognition for helping save countless lives.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s Mobile Stroke Unit was awarded a first-of its-kind accreditation Tuesday for its commitment to quality care and dedication to continuous improvement.

Local 24 first brought you the story of how the unit saved an Alabama man earlier this year after his plane was diverted to Memphis when he suffered a major stroke.

Reps say the prestigious, three-year certification is a seal of approval highlighting its patient care.

“Achieving this accreditation really tells the public they can be certain they are receiving the highest quality of CT scanning right in the field, or perhaps at their house or their place of work,” said Chief Nurse Practitioner Anne Alexandrov. “It is the 1st mobile stroke unit in the world to receive this accreditation.”

The unit is housed at a fire station on East McLemore, a location organizers say will better respond to calls in areas of most need and to be able to easily reach a large portion of the community.
