MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – A first-hand look at new projects and renovations happening in a historic Memphis neighborhood took place Sunday. It was part of the Victorian Village Home Tour, which offered visitors a unique chance to see inside well-known historic homes and buildings.

Participants walked along Adams Avenue near downtown Memphis to see what life was like on “Millionaire’s Row” in the 1800s.

“These are the greatest architectural treasures that we have between here at Natchez, Mississippi, really. And only this small area was preserved, because we had a period in our history called Urban Renewal, 1960 to 1970, where they bulldozed almost all of our historic properties because they had turned into slums,” said Scott Blake, Executive Director of Victorian Village, Inc.

“It was a very, very different place, but really, these houses are a testament to who we are in Memphis,” said Memphis historian Willy Bearden.

Collins Chapel CME Church choir then held a mini-concert for visitors, and St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral offered organ demonstrations.
