Volunteer Memphis calls for volunteers for MLK Days of Service

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wasborn on this day, 91 years ago. In honor of him, the city will partake in itsfourth annual MLK Days of Service organized by Volunteer Memphis. 

Volunteer Memphis is asking for volunteers toparticipate during the four days of service which runs from Friday to Monday.

Across the Mid-South, there are more than 50 activities people canparticipate in to honor Dr. King and to help their communities. There will becommunity cleanups in neighborhoods like Soulsville, Binghampton, and OrangeMound. They’ll also be painting the rails of the bluff walk along RiversideDrive and cleaning up T.O. Fuller State Park.

Volunteer Memphis says there are opportunities for everyone. 

“These four days of service are really an opportunity for us,across the Mid-South, for about ten counties, where we can serve each other incommunity,” Volunteer Memphis Director Andrea Hill said.

Last year they had more than 3,000 volunteers. They hope tosurpass that for the fourth annual event.

“It is an awesome opportunity for us to honor Dr. King. Oneof his main goals is really for us to have a beloved community and the way forus to have a beloved community is really for me, through volunteerism,”Hill said.

MLK Days of Service will kick off on Thursday night with acelebration at Benjamin Hooks Central Library from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
