Volunteer Skate Park Raising Funds To Maintain Course

Organizers are hoping people will throw down some much-needed cash to help maintain a skate park in Midtown Memphis.

“This place is very important,” said Brock Berriel. “It gives people a sense of belonging.”

For roughly eight years the skate park on Roland Street has been the sole responsibility of volunteers and people in the neighborhood.

“We put in money from our own pockets,” said Berriel.

This Saturday, Berriel and the skating community is hoping people in the area will show love for Altown Park.

Friends helped design a poster to drum up support. A festival-like event is set for noon at Hi Tone and will feature local bands and artists.

“If it goes well, hopefully we can do it again next year,” said Berriel.

All the money raised will go back into keeping Altown Park skate worthy for both skaters and cyclists looking to turn tricks.

“This place is great,” said Berriel. “It’s great for the community. It’s great for the culture, if you like it. I feel like we’re bringing positive changes to the area and giving it a bit of life.”
