MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, along with Memphis Police Director Mike Rallings and Col. Darren Goods talked Wednesday morning about murders in Memphis and how the city is on pace to set a record for the number of children killed.
Memphis top brass announced 18 children have been killed this year alone. 14 of those were murdered.
One was ruled a justifiable homicide.
The youngest victim was a 9-month-old baby.
This year, we've had 120 murders, most committed by someone known to the victim.
"We have got to change our narrative. If things continue on this rate, we will break the 2016 record number of homicides,” said MPD Director Mike Rallings. “Change and reform is very important and is critical. But the conversation cannot stop with police. The Memphis Police Department cannot combat crime alone.”
MPD and Mayor Jim Strickland are urging anyone who knows anything about these murders to call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH. You can remain anonymous.
