Local 24 News was at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in South Memphis Monday night, where dozens of residents packed the church for a town hall meeting.
Councilman Edmund Ford organized the gathering, so residents could receive updates about redevelopment plans of Southgate.
“We got a new grocery store coming into South Memphis, you know we lost it in January,” said Councilman Ford. “It took six months of hard work to get this done, but a Cash Saver is set to open the first week of August.”
The store will replace Kroger which use to be on South Third Street.
MATA officials were also present to brief residents about their hope to improve routes in South Memphis. Residents claim the buses don’t come consistently, leaving people stranded for work.
The meeting ended with a discussion about instant runoff voting.
“Recognize the importance and how precious our votes are. So, I just want to say to everyone we have a responsibility to carry this to as many people as we can to educate them, that’s what it requires,” said one community member.
Councilman Ford is also trying to get $2,500 approved for additional sky cop cameras in South Memphis.
“If you go to other neighborhoods, drive down particular streets, every other street has a skycop camera,” Councilman Ford said. “Why can’t my community have the same thing.”
Councilman Ford says he’s planning more town hall style meetings in the future.
