SHELBY COUNTY, Tennessee —

In a unanimous decision Monday, the Shelby County Commission approved the "ban the box” ordinance.

It eliminates the criminal history question from employment applications. Members approved amendments that expanded to businesses beyond Shelby County wanting to hire ex-offenders, and provides company incentives if they participate.

Mayor Lee Harris praised the approval, saying it helps reduce the number of people cycling in and out of our criminal justice system.
