MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – School has started for Shelby County Schools’ students.

Schools across the SCS District welcome back students from the summer break in a special way.

At Delano Optional Elementary, in Frayser, teachers lined the walkwayholding signs and cheering with pom poms as each child walked into the schoolfor the first day.

Principal Shadonica Scruggs said it was important to make the studentsexcited for the first day to ensure a successful start.

“We want them to feel great about coming to school on the year. Wewant them to be anxiously anticipating all of the great things that are goingto be coming,” Scruggs said.

With the start of the new school year comes the start of newdistrict-wide initiatives. This year, schools are promoting a third gradeliteracy program and an African-American Male Empowerment initiative. 

At Delano, reading is at the forefront of their focus. Outside of eachclassroom is decorated and book themed.

Scruggs said that first day excitement will carry over into ensuringtheir students can improve their reading abilities this school year.
