HENDERSON, Texas (KETK) – Some local girls are making history by being among the first to join what was “The Boy Scouts of America” that is now known as “Scouts BSA.” Watch report by clicking here.

“To obey the Scout law,” the girls repeat as they make the pledge that more than 3,000 girls have made across the country.

“Girls can fully be in the program and they can work towards advancement and learn the scouting principles,” explains Shana Moland, a Scout BSA Troop Leader in Henderson, Texas.

Shana Moland was a scout in The Boy Scouts of America.

“I didn’t know Boy Scouts of America at all and through that exploring post I discovered the BSA,” says Moland. She was part of the Exploring Post, a program that falls under The Boy Scouts of America. It is just one of the programs the BSA offers that includes girls.

Now, there will be Scouting BSA girl troops and Scouting BSA boy troops.

Girl Scout cookie season is still ongoing and for many, it’s a staple everywhere but on the back of the box there’s a symbol of the highest award a Girl Scout can receive, the Gold Award.

However, for some, it’s an award that doesn’t quite measure up. With this new program girls have the opportunity to earn awards that were exclusive to “Boy Scouts.”

“Their dad, my husband is an Eagle Scout and they are like oh did you get your eagle scout? and I’m like no. well, why not? well, that wasn’t available, that wasn’t possible,” a question Moland says he own girls have asked.

While many have criticized the new decision the East Texas BSA Council believes it’s simply just another option.

“We’re not competing with other programs necessarily. we just felt like it is an opportunity for young women to have a choice in what kind of leadership and outdoor programs they want to be a part of,” says Daniel Anderson, Assistant Scout Executive.

For some, the change shows girls can do anything boys can do.
