Opinion | America needs to trust the vaccine if we definitely want to get rid of the virus | Richard Ransom

Local 24 News Anchor Richard Ransom discusses in his Ransom Note about the changing percentage of people that will or won't get the vaccine.

MEMPHIS, Tenn — In tonight’s Ransom Note: trust and the COVID vaccine.

How do you feel about getting the COVID vaccine?

Scientists say if we’re going to keep this awful virus from mutating, about 75 percent of us need to get the shot.

Otherwise, it could take on a new form and everything we’ve been through will have been for nothing.

But even first responders aren’t so sure about taking the vaccine, more than half of New York City firefighters said in a union poll that they’ll take a pass.

And a new pew poll found fewer than half of Black Americans, or just 42 percent, said they’d get the shot.

The good knows is more of us are slowly coming around.

That same pew poll found 60 percent of all Americans would probably get the vaccine. That’s up nine points from September’s 51 percent.

And 70 percent agreed: once public health officials say it’s safe and effective, they’ll get the vaccine.

One thing’s for sure: it’s going to take a massive public education campaign to get enough Americans on board so that we really can get back to some kind of a normal life.
