Opinion | The loudest and meanest voices obscure social media | Richard Ransom

Richard Ransom breaks down the differences between our behaviors in person and online.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Ever noticed as you go about your everyday life, most people you deal with at work, down the block, or even when spending $4 a gallon for gas are basically decent and normal? Yet we encounter the exact opposite on social media?

Kudos to Axios.com for digging into how the loudest and meanest voices obscure what most of us experience. Most of us are busy, normal and mostly silent without big Twitter followings or cable news contracts.

Here are some reassuring facts:

  • 75% of Americans never tweet.
  • On an average weeknight in January, just 1% of us watched FOX News during prime time and 0.5% of us tuned into MSNBC.
  • Nearly three times more Americans, 56%, donated to charities during the pandemic than gave money to politicians or political parties, 51%.

When it comes to political parties and the bickering between them, Gallup asked people which party they identified with. 27% said Republicans, 29% said Democrats and 42% said Independents. Independents would by far be the largest political party.

These are polarizing times for sure, but there's a silent majority that might give you hope.
