Opinion | Skycop cams don't seem to make a dent in auto-related crime

"Too often the answer seems to be adding more flashing blue Sky Cop cams ... please show me how they've made one dent in our crime problem," asks Richard Ransom.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Richard Ransom reporting:

May car crimes out of control. With incidents of cars being broken into (or outright stolen) up 150 percent in Memphis, you can be forgiven for being hesitant about going out these days.

I'm hearing that from many of you and in my personal circles as well — people who've never said that before. But who wants to go out to dinner only to come out and find you're car windows smashed, or worse, your car gone?

And now these car crimes seem to be getting more brazen — more troubling.

The week started with this story: Bad guys pulling up to an office building parking lot at poplar and Kirby, and as quickly as they can, they take the top off of a yellow corvette. It only took the thieves about a minute to steal it.

And then on Friday some moron decides to damage the exhibit right below the wreath where Dr. King was shot by jumping on the roof of what may be the most photographed car in Memphis.

Too often the answer seems to be adding more flashing blue Sky Cop cams.

We must have more per capita than any city in the country, yet please show me how they've made one dent in our crime problem.

They haven't. Actual solutions won't be nearly that easy.
