Opinion | In role of Santa, Gov. Lee hands out gifts to Memphis in budget amendment | Richard Ransom

Anchor Richard Ransom asks why Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee wants to give Memphis fewer gifts than Nashville.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — I'll never forget the first time my daughter noticed some kids always got more from Santa Claus at Christmas than she did.

It's a tough conversation for any parent, but a good life lesson.

That's kind of how it feels now that Gov. Bill Lee has put out his budget amendment before lawmakers go home for the year.

Memphis is getting $20 million that Mayor Jim Strickland badly wanted to expand our riverfront docks at Beale Street Landing. Being able to handle more cruise boats, like Viking, will help our rapidly growing riverboat tourism industry.

In addition, the National Civil Rights Museum is getting $10 million and the Brooks Museum of Art is getting $2.5 million.

Nashville is getting $17 million in grants to prepare a track to lure a NASCAR race and $55 million to finance the initial debt service for issuing up to $500 million in bonds to build a new domed stadium for the NFL's Tennessee Titans.

There's almost $80 million for air carriers and general aviation — some of which should help FedEx and Memphis International Airport. We'll also all benefit from a freeze on the 4% tax on groceries.

Why does it seem like every time Christmas rolls around for the Tennessee legislature, at least one other kid always gets more?
