Opinion | What moms really want on Mother’s Day | Richard Ransom

Happy Mother’s Day, moms!

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — In Friday’s Ransom Note: A Mother’s Day where moms really deserve some recognition. Think about this: since the COVID-19 global pandemic, 10 million moms stayed home with their school age children.

A Kaiser Family Foundation poll finding 69% of mothers experienced an adverse health effect from the stress and worry from the pandemic. 59% of women said they do more of the household chores. 74% of moms reported doing more managing of their children’s schedules and activities, according to a Pew study in October.

So a Washington Post story Friday said what mothers absolutely do not need this year is a well-intentioned, but work intensive activity. Don't make mom host a family gathering; she doesn't need to be cleaning up a messy kitchen after brunch or keeping track of the kids. Don't even give her a flower bush that needs to be planted before it dies.

The best gift according to an overwhelming number of experts that were asked? Give her a day and night at a hotel --alone-- to herself to recharge, watch TV, listen to her music, and soak in the tub. Happy Mother’s Day, moms!
