Opinion | Looking someone in the human eye is better than the camera's eye | Richard Ransom

Richard Ransom explains why he thinks in-person meetings are better for collaboration than video meetings.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Mom would always say coffee would stunt our growth, but when it comes to our economy, Zoom meetings may be to blame for stunting its growth.

Axios.com shared a story about how in-person meetings generate more creative ideas and innovation compared to video meetings.

Here's why:

  • Turns out the secret sauce is that when we see each other face-to-face, we share more visual cues with each other and that can lead to ideas. When we meet virtually, our eyes are focused on screens and we ignore our environments.
  • We also stay still more when we work virtually, which stunts our creativity. When we were in person or even when we talk on the phone, we walk around, look around and use our hands more.

The pandemic made sure using Zoom to save time and money isn't going anywhere, but it's good to be reminded about the effectiveness of looking someone in the human eye, not the camera's eye.
