Opinion | With the boundary dispute, you can't make this stuff up | Richard Ransom

Richard Ransom explains what he thinks about new developments in the Shelby/Fayette County boundary dispute in Arlington.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — You can't make this stuff up.

I'm talking about this situation in Arlington, where hundreds of neighbors who for years thought they lived in Shelby County, are now being told they live in Fayette County.

We might not even know about it yet, if FedEx pilot Lee Mills hadn't decided he wanted to run to be a state representative. He was told he couldn't because his house, and hundreds of his neighbors', are in Fayette County, not Shelby.

A judge ruled last week Mills' house is in Shelby County, but the judge refused to rule about his neighbors. In fact, the Shelby County Election Commission said it has to go by what the state says for now, potentially disenfranchising hundreds of voters.

Did we mention Lee Mills' wife, Amber, is already an elected official? She's a Shelby County commissioner, but she got sued by the election commission Wednesday.

She now has to go before a judge who will decide if she can seek re-election and stay on the ballot. Even though her roommate and husband are in Shelby County, a court must decide if she is too.
