MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis Redbirds’ left-hander Austin Gomber has been named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 23-29, the league office announced Monday.

In just his fourth career Triple-A start, Gomber dominated the Iowa Cubs on April 23 in Des Moines, Iowa, striking out 16 batters. After loading the bases with no outs in the first, Gomber recorded his first strikeout of the day before getting an inning-ending double play to escape. Including the final two batters in the first inning, Gomber retired 16-straight batters, 12 via strikeout, until allowing a single in the sixth inning.

Gomber pitched 8.0 strong innings, allowing just six hits without a walk on top of his 16 strikeouts. Gomber’s previous career-high was 11 strikeouts.

The lefty put himself in the Redbirds’ record books, as well. He tied Lance Lynn with the most strikeouts in franchise history. Lynn struck out 16 batters on Sept. 10, 2010 in the PCL Playoffs. Gomber’s 16 strikeout performance gave him the most strikeouts in the regular season in Redbirds’ history, pushing him past Anthony Reyes and Bill Pulsipher, both of whom struck out 15 batters in 2005.
