Knox County Mayor urges caution on roads ahead of winter weather

Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs said that crews could not pretreat roads if rain precedes snow, since it would wash away the salt.

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — Possible winter weather is in the forecast over the weekend, and so Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs talked about the county's process for ensuring roads are safe.

During his weekly update on Friday, he urged people to be careful if they are traveling over the weekend. He said that if rain precedes snow during a winter weather situation, crews cannot pretreat roads to ensure they are safe. Stormwater washes away the salt, he said.

"Please be careful if you are traveling this weekend, and if we have to send out crews to clear the roads, please keep them in your prayers as it is hazardous work," Jacobs said.

He also said that Knox County government offices, including convenience centers, libraries and the health department will be closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Weather experts said that scattered snow showers were likely on Saturday, with highs in the middle 30s. Wind chills could be in the 20s for most of the day.
