DeSoto County was hit with the second wave of the ice storm Tuesday, Jan. 31. The worst is over, and the county is now working to make sure roads stay safe.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Our team has been spread out across the region bring you the latest on the ice storm.

Tuesday afternoon was the second wave of icy weather much different from what DeSoto County saw early Tuesday morning. Monday, they started prepping the roads anticipating the ice.

Throughout the county, roads were clear with a few flurries. You could see ice in the trees which concerned the county as it could lead to falling branches and power outages. Some of the rural areas did see sporadic outages.

There were some accidents on highway overpasses such as I-55, 269, and Hwy 71. Luckily, there were no injuries.

Around 2 p.m., rain started again. Chris Olson, DeSoto County Emergency Services Director, said first responders were out in full forces for those who may need help.

“If you don’t have to be out, don’t get out. Stay home if you can and you’re able to do it. This next round of weather should bring more ice which we’re not going to above freezing. It should create more treacherous traffic conditions to be in, so stay home if you can,” said Olson.

The county is also encouraging residents to check on their neighbors as temperatures stay below freezing.
