Severe thunderstorm causes damage across Greater Memphis area

Huge trees crashed down, power knocked out to tens of thousands of people

MEMPHIS, Tennessee —

Memphis Light, Gas and Water now is working to get the power back on for thousands of customers who lost power after severe thunderstorms blew through Memphis late Friday afternoon. Outages impacted roughly 50,000 customers. Strong winds hit the Mid-South causing heavy damage in various neighborhoods. A huge tree crushed a car on Holmes Road in East Memphis.   Dorothy Annette Harper heard the impact.

“I thought something had fallen and fell on the house and I was scared for me and my dog so and I looked up and there it go, the tree is down so I ran across the street and made sure everybody, my neighbors were okay,” Harper explained.

The storm blew the roof off of Earle High School in Crittenden County.   There were also downed trees and powerlines off Shadowlawn Road in Bartlett and near Pamela Ann Drive.

“I’m just thankful didn’t nobody get hurt , you can replace a vehicle but you can’t replace a life, Harper said.
