Slushy snow leads to slick spots on the roadways

There is also a concern for black ice to develop by Monday morning.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A brief period of heavy snow on Sunday morning has led to some slick spots on the roadways.

Many spots saw 1-3" of snow and, while most of that didn't stick on the roadways, there is still a slush on many roadways.

If at all possible, it's recommended to stay off the roadways today and early Monday morning until conditions fully improve.

However, crews have been plowing interstates, so most major highways are passable if you take them at a slow speed.

There are still problems on side streets and neighborhood roads, where roadways remain untreated and unplowed. You'll find a slippery slush on these streets that may make it hard to gain traction.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing this afternoon, which should allow some slush to continue to melt.

However, with temperatures expected to fall into the 20s by Monday morning, anything that is left on the roads could re-freeze into black ice.

Black ice is a thin layer of transparent ice that is very hard to see on the pavement until you begin to lose traction.

If you hit a patch of black ice, do not slam on the brakes. Let your foot off the accelerator and try to keep the steering wheel as straight as possible.
