MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Civil rights icon and former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young talked business Wednesday as he joined city leaders for the “We Mean Business” symposium at the Universal Life building.
Young is a supporter of economic empowerment nationwide. He is known for helping add more minority and women-owned businesses during his time in office from 1982 to 1990.
Young said Memphis is in one of the best positions in the nation when it comes to business.
“40% of our trade nationally goes down the Mississippi, so when we get the Mississippi fixed right, Memphis is very well poised. Luckily, you’re on the upside of the river,” said Young.
Young was an early leader in the civil rights movement. He served as executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He was also a close friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
