Former FedEx hub worker indicted, accused of stealing gold bars from shipment worth $12,000+

(SHELBY COUNTY D.A. NEWS RELEASE) – A FedEx hub worker was indicted Tuesday for felony theft over $10,000 after security officers found eight thin gold bullion bars from a FedEx shipment hidden in his wallet as he was leaving work, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Defendant Darrel Parker, 50, is free on $3,000 bond.

According to investigators, on Dec. 5, 2017, Parker was working in the FedEx package sorting facility on Democrat Road when he took the bars from a package and tried to leave work.

Security officers at the screening area noticed a dark object in his wallet and discovered the bars which weigh 37.5 grams each and have a total value estimated at more than $12,000.

Parker was terminated from his job.

The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. J. D. Hamblen of the District Attorney’s Vertical Team 5 which prosecutes cases in General Sessions Division 13 and Criminal Court Division 9.
