MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Local 24 Cares and the Mid-South Food Bank teamed up for Turkey Truck Tuesday.
All day, volunteers accepted donations outside Kroger on Farmington Boulevard in Germanton. Shoppers gave items such as frozen turkeys, canned food and money.
Everything collected will go towards feeding a family in need during the Thanksgiving holiday.
About 370,000 people in the Mid-South face food insecurity. One in five are children. A dollar can help provide someone with three meals and $15 will feed a family of four.
That is why many who gave at the drive said it was important to support.
“It breaks my heart that any child or anybody should ever have to worry about whether they have enough to eat,” said Pat Jacobs, a donor.
“It’s sad because I feel like everybody deserves a hot meal,” said Lydia Johnson, another donor.
Kroger delivered carts of more than 100 turkeys.
Most of those who donated said their only regret was that they couldn’t give more.
Turkey Truck Tuesday ran from 5:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
