CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA/WATE) – – A Chattanooga woman was killed and several others injured in a deadly boat explosion in the Bahamas on Saturday morning.

The victim was identified by her father as Maleka Grimes Jackson. The accident injured nine other people, including a 22-year-old American woman who had to have both of her legs amputated as a result of the blast.

There were 12 people on the boat at the time of the explosion.

Coast Guard watchstanders were contacted by the Royal Bahamas Police Force around 11 a.m. Saturday about the explosion. Shortly after being asked to assist, an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew and two medical personnel launched from Air Station Clearwater.

The crew then landed in Exuma and transported four injured boaters back to the Clearwater air station so they could receive emergency medical services.

The Exuma branch of the Royal Bahamas Police Force is now investigating the explosion.
