MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Kerrigan Cannon wrote an essay about tennis. The home-schooled fourth-grader said the sport changed her life.
She wrote, “have you ever been a part of something, something, so great, you wanted to shout it from the rooftops? This is the way I feel about the National Junior Tennis League Community.”
Kerrigan said she learned important social skills, and basics about tennis.
“I learned forehand, backhand, serve,” she said.
She also learned about self-confidence.
She wrote about in an essay for the National Arthur Ashe USTA Foundation National Junior Tennis League essay contest.
Kerrigan said she suffers from social anxiety. On her first day of camp, she said, she got sick because of it. But as camp continued, she looked forward to going each day.
Now she’s getting ready for next week’s all-expense paid trip to the U.S. Open and New York City for her winning submission, and she’s excited about it.
“On a scale from 1 to 10, it was probably 115.”
