DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. (localmemphis.com) – Wednesday was the first day of the new school year for DeSoto County Schools.

Teachers and students were welcomed back after summer break. Some students were introduced to brand-new classrooms at several schools after construction over the summer. School leaders say the new classrooms will be able to handle the growth in the area over the years.

Officials say there was plenty of excitement in the air for the first day back.

“The first day of school, there’s always a lot of excitement in the air, and the students are real excited. Some of them anxious, especially if they’re going to their first year at a new school. And, at the same time, the teachers are real excited. They’re rested up from the summer break, and are real excited about meeting their students and getting off to a great start,” said DCS superintendent Cory Uselton.

Tipton county students also went back to school Wednesday.

Monday, Shelby County, Fayette County, and several local municipalities will head back to school.

Tuesday, West Memphis will start its first day back.
