MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Shelby County Schools want to make sure that students are getting the emotional support they need this school year.
Wednesday was the ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening of the trauma-informed center at Geeter K-8 School.
Studies show that students can’t focus in schools because of social-emotional issues in their lives. Students are helped based on absences, troubles at home, and more possible problems, in an effort to help focus in on those students’ health.
“We definitely want to be the model. Social-emotional learning and awareness and combatting aces is our work,” said Eric Harris, Principal of Geeter K-8 School. “We spend a whole lot of time trying to figure out how to reach students and try to get them to perform, but we don’t put the work in trying to figure out where’s their mind right now. Why is it that they’re not retaining this knowledge instead of continually throwing new knowledge at them.”
Social-emotional learning is one of the district’s top priorities as part of efforts to develop a more supportive district for students.
