MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – An investigation is underway after five children were found home alone when a fire broke out at the house they were in Monday morning.

It happened about 9:00 a.m. in the 4500 block of Willow Road in east Memphis. MFD officials confirmed to Local 24 News five children were left unattended in the house.

Investigators said they believed neighbors helped the children to safety. A friend of one of the neighbors tells Local 24 News the children got themselves out of the home and were out on the front lawn.

No person was injured. But a dog did die despite efforts to save it.

Local 24 News crew saw all five children get loaded into a vehicle and taken from the scene. The children’s grandmother tells us they are all under the age of ten, with the youngest 3-years-old.

On scene, a man was taken into custody and put in the back of a police cruiser.

The cause of the fire and possible charges related to it have not been released.
