MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – In Shelby County Schools, high-quality early education is critical to ensuring long-term academic success. That’s why SCS has started the “Commit to Literacy” Program.

They invite business owners and local celebrities out to read to students. Friday, Local 24 News weeknight anchor Katina Rankin had the honor of being the guest reader.

Organizers say their early learners must be engaged in literacy-rich environments that offer meaningful, authentic opportunities to develop reading skills.

“If you look at our recent TNReady data, you will see one in four children in SCS is reading at grade level or mastery. So we need to do better. We need to take a look at ourselves in the city to see where we can take part to ensure our students are ready before they reach the third grade,” said Tiffany Perry, Public Information Officer for Shelby County Schools.
