MEMPHIS, Tenn. ( — The countdown to Christmas is intensifying and so are FedEx shipping centers with shipments expected to break records.

Monday mornings at shipping centers like the Cordova facility are at its busiest when it comes to the month of December. FedEx can thank the turn to online shopping for that.

Monday morning FedEx is expecting to process more than 30 million shipments. That’s double its normal day-to-day volume.

For the holidays, FedEx hires an additional 55,000 employees, according to spokesperson Bonny Harrison.

Harrison says FedEx is expecting to see record shipping volumes.

“The record season is really just thanks in part to the explosive growth of e-commerce. The more people that shop online, the more goods are moving through our global network, and it’s really having a staggering effect,” Harrison said.

Despite having less time between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, Harrison says it’s expecting its operational intensity will be the same.

Harrison said preparation for the busy shipping holiday is a year-long process.

“We work with our major customers to make sure that we have the correct forecasts and we are to make sure that we understand what they’re looking at and what they think their volumes is going to be. It’s an ongoing process that really takes us throughout the year,” she said.

This holiday season, FedEx recommends utilizing its FedEx Delivery Manager. That will allow people to choose safe locations to ship their items if they begin to pile up on doorsteps.

The last day for regular ground shipping to ensure packages arrive in time for Christmas is December 16.
